gut health superfood

100% Peat HumusConcentrated 100xNo fillers1 g daily

Peathumus™ is pure, concentrated peat humus from the deepest catotelm layer of northern peat bogs: fully decomposed organic matter that has been forming for about 10,000 years, since the end of the last Ice Age. It is a finite, rare resource found only in northern peatlands. We ethically harvest raw peat humus in small batches, then filter, concentrate it 100 times, purify it and dry it into one fine powder, naturally rich in humic substances, fulvic substances and a broad spectrum of trace minerals.*

Long before gut health was a trend, peatlands were quietly at work. Layer by layer, plants settled into cool, waterlogged bogs and slowly transformed, concentrating and compressing into humus: dense, dark and naturally rich in humic substances, fulvic substances and trace minerals.

We go to that ancient catotelm bottom layer, then extract, filter, concentrate, purify and dry it into a fine powder 100 times more concentrated than the raw humus. No blends, no flavours, no fillers.

Ancient, rare and naturally occurring: the gut health superfood from the end of the Ice Age.

Think of a tree: the acrotelm is the leaves, and the catotelm is the trunk and branches. (IUCN)

The science of a peat bog

Three layers. Scientists describe a raised bog in layers. The acrotelm (top 10–40 cm) is the living, breathing layer. Its water table rises and falls, so it is periodically exposed to air, water moves through it easily, and aerobic microbes do most of the decomposing. Below it, the mesotelm (roughly 30–75 cm, recognised by Clymo & Bryant, 2008) is a transition zone where plant matter is rapidly transformed into humus. Growers call the light, fibrous upper peat white peat and the dense, dark, heavily humified peat below it black peat. Deepest is the catotelm: permanently waterlogged, with no oxygen and very little water movement. Here anaerobic microbes work extremely slowly, and organic matter is compressed into dense, fully decomposed peat over thousands of years. Many bogs began as shallow lakes, so beneath the peat there is often a layer of gyttja, a fine organic lake-bed sediment, resting on the original bedrock.

How old is each layer? Roughly: living peat moss on top is about 10–100 years old, the acrotelm about 100–1,000 years, the mesotelm about 1,000–3,000 years, the catotelm about 3,000–5,000 years, and the Peathumus™ layer at the bottom about 5,000–10,000 years. Exact ages vary from bog to bog.

A living surface. On top, bogs form a self-organising pattern of raised hummocks and wet hollows, sometimes merged into long strings and flarks that follow the land's contours. Each creates its own micro-habitat of moisture, oxygen and nutrients, with its own Sphagnum species, plants and microbes.

Why the bottom layer. Peathumus comes from the deepest, oldest part of the catotelm, where ten thousand years of slow, oxygen-free transformation have produced fully decomposed peat humus.

What is inside

Four gifts from the bog.
One ingredient.

Peat humus is not a blend. It is a single whole material that naturally carries four things we care about.

Humic substances

Large, complex organic compounds that form as plant matter breaks down over millennia. Humic acids are the larger molecules: in nature they are known for binding minerals and other compounds, and they are being studied for how they support beneficial gut bacteria. They give peat humus its deep colour, and they sit at the heart of why we built Peathumus around gut health.*

Fulvic substances

The smaller, lighter fraction of humus. Fulvic acids are small molecules studied for their role in carrying nutrients, and they help support normal digestion. Our extraction is designed to concentrate them.*

Older than shilajit. The superior choice.

Shilajit is famous for its fulvic content, but it forms over centuries as it seeps from mountain rock. Peat humus has been forming for up to 10,000 years, slowly compressed under the full weight of the bog above it. That makes it the superior choice: a far older source with humic and fulvic substances and trace minerals, concentrated 100 times.*

Trace minerals

Peat humus forms slowly from generations of plants that grew, died and decomposed over millennia. Over that time, minerals accumulate and concentrate in the humus, so every scoop carries a naturally occurring spectrum of trace minerals. Nothing isolated, nothing added back in.*

10,000 years in the making: from the deepest layer of the bog
From nature to gut health

Nature's ancient nourisher, now for your gut*

In nature, humus is the rich, living heart of a healthy ecosystem. It holds water and nutrients where living things can reach them, and it feeds the beneficial microbes that keep that ecosystem thriving.

Your gut is an ecosystem too. Peathumus™ is concentrated and purified to bring those same humic and fulvic substances, along with naturally occurring trace minerals, into your daily routine. Researchers are studying how they interact with the gut microbiome, nutrient absorption and digestion, and Peathumus was inspired by and built around this emerging research.*

Questions

Good to know

What exactly is peat humus?

Peat humus is the dark, fully decomposed organic layer at the bottom of peat bogs. It forms over thousands of years as plant matter settles into cool, waterlogged bogs and slowly transforms. It naturally contains humic substances, fulvic substances and trace minerals.

How do I take Peathumus?

Mix 1 g (about ½ teaspoon) into water or your preferred beverage once daily. Many people take it with their multivitamin or stir it into a protein shake or pre-workout. Some like to take it straight off the spoon.

What does it taste like?

Naturally rich and mild. If you would rather not notice it, stir it into coffee, juice or a smoothie.

How long does one jar last?

Each 30 g jar holds 30 servings: a full month at one serving per day. Three jars cover 90 days.

Is anything else in the jar?

No. The only ingredient is 100% peat humus, concentrated 100x. No fillers, sweeteners, flavours or additives.

Is it right for me?

Peathumus is a supplement for healthy adults. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition, talk to your healthcare provider before use.

Is Peathumus an anti-parasitic?

No. Peathumus is not intended to treat parasites or any infection. If you think you have one, see your doctor. Peathumus is a daily supplement that supports a balanced gut microbiome and a healthy gut environment.*

Does Peathumus detox heavy metals?

Peathumus is not a treatment for heavy metal exposure or poisoning. In nature, humic substances are known for binding metals, and researchers are studying how they behave in the gut. As a daily supplement, Peathumus supports your body's natural detoxification processes.*

Why do athletes take Peathumus?

Peathumus provides antioxidant support and helps you get more from the nutrients in your diet and supplements, which supports normal energy metabolism and recovery from the oxidative stress of hard training.
